Grandad and Parkinson's

1938 February - 2018 November

Our grandad was born in Uganda, Africa on 20th February 1938. He has spent his whole life working hard, especially since having to start a new life with a young family here in the UK unexpectedly.

Grandad has been a very helpful, caring person. For as long as I can remember he's only ever whole-heartedly helped his family and friends when needed.

It was unfortunate that he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease approximately 10 years ago, which began with only a mild tremor.

We watched him suffer over the next 10 years with progressive Parkinson's, and arthritis taking over his body. Despite medication, he struggled with simple muscle movements.

The last few months were the most difficult for him. He had begun to struggle with swallowing of food and water. Speech and language therapy helped, with his food intake being modified, he seemed to be coping for a short time. His Parkinson's didn't stop here though. It worsened to a point where he was admitted into hospital due to insufficient swallowing functions, which led to pneumonia.

He was weak now, and his body not able to fight back. We realised he wouldn't be with us for long. Sadly we said goodbye to our grandad on Friday 2nd November 2018.

There isn't enough awareness of the consequences of Parkinson's and living with such a condition. I realised the struggles of this condition myself as I watched it defeat Grandad.

This tribute is dedicated on behalf of our Grandad, to Parkinson's UK, for their continued research and development into a condition which is affecting the lives of more and more.
